Hollywood touched down on Duluth Monday as movie stars George Clooney and Renee Zellweger came to the Depot to promote their new film "Leatherheads."
The film's storyline takes place in Duluth. "Leatherheads" is a romantic comedy based on the story of Duluth's former NFL team called the Eskimos.
The celebrities were escorted into the Depot by train for a press conference.
"I just like good films and this was good, you know," Zellweger, actor in film.
Clooney, who directed the film, said there is only one reason why it wasn't shot in Duluth.
"Thought about shooting here, but it was in February and apparently it's cold here in February," said Clooney, actor.
Zellweger was impressed with the city's beauty and history. "Such a rich history here, it was kind of interesting to learn a little bit about it," she said.
The team's name was changed to the Bulldogs in the film--Clooney says because the NFL wouldn't give rights to the name "Eskimos" if drinking was in the movie. "They don't drink in the NFL?" he joked. "I was shocked to hear I couldn't believe it."
But Clooney didn't forget about the success of the real Bulldogs at UMD. "By the way congratulations for the lady bulldogs how about that?" he said.
Mayor Don Ness proclaimed March 24th, 2008 "Leatherheads Day" in Duluth. "I am proud to welcome the stars of this picture," he said.
After the press conference, fans got a chance to shake hands, take pictures and get an autograph.
"Oh my god, he looked so gorgeous!" said Cassie Greene, Duluth. "My
birthday wish came true, I got to meet George Clooney!"
If you would like to see the film "Leatherheads," it opens in Duluth on April 4th.
