Regal Hollywood 20 in Greenville, South Carolina was the top theatre in total gross sales for “Leatherheads” in the Atlanta Region, based on its box office take on Friday, the day the movie was released nationwide. The weekend results will be finalized today but the Friday results should not change.
Hollywood 20 took in more than $15,000 in gross receipts while the average theatre nationally reported an average $4,869.
The romantic-comedy starred and was directed by George Clooney. Renee Zellweger and John Krasinski also played starring roles.
One big reason for the big turnout was the extravagant premiere for the Extras held at the theatre and the parties at the BMW Zentrum and Copper River Grill.
Charlie Mazzi, Hollywood 20 General Manager, and Stephanie Lorentz, assistant manager, could not comment. All inquiries were steered toward the corporate office which was closed on Sunday.” Personnel who worked the premiere said it was one of the most exciting and busiest nights they could remember.
Extras were dancing in the theatre as they were listening to music performed by Lesley Gaither and J.P. VanHoy.
The premiere at Hollywood 20 featured “Your Carolina” co-anchors Jack Roper and Kimberly Kelly emceeing the Red Carpet walk for all the extras and their guests and families. The popular pair introduced each extra and told a little about each.
Brandon Ball, a mirror image of George Clooney, was a sensational hit with all the fans. Taylor Pack, dressed as Renee Zellweger and a stand-in on the set for the starlet, created a stir with her likeness. Miss Greater Greer Stefanie Vaughn was a popular guest and frequent photo opportunity.
Almost 800 extras and their friends joined in the fun that included a two-hour Red Carpet event, prize giveaways at the theatre and BMW.
Sammy Ridgeway, owner of Ribault Street Bakery and Catery in Spartanburg provided a superior presentation at the BMW Zentrum.
For the weekend “Leatherheads” trailed “21”, $15.1 million to $13.45, respectively. “Nim’s Island” was third as of Sunday with $13.3 million.
“Leatherheads” saw the most interest among the older set. Of the audience, 75 percent was over the age of 30, while 50 percent of the audience was over the age of 40.
“Leatherheads” is Clooney’s third directing effort after “Good Night, And Good Luck,” which grossed $31.5 million domestically, and “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,” which grossed $16 million. Both opened in limited runs.
“The results are less than we hoped for. The movie is a fun ride, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. George Clooney is a great director, and I think they came for him. I’m disappointed for him” Universal president of distribution Nikki Rocco said.
“Having said that, there is a lot going on. I do think the basketball playoffs hurt attendance in the big cities. What really upsets me is the level of overall business.”
